It was the biggest Naval Invasion in history. D-Day took place on June 6th, 1944. The Allies tried to liberate France from Nazi occupation. A few years prior (in 1941) Adolf Hitler and Germany took control of Paris, France which resulted in them occupying the country. Most French reluctantly accepted the occupation, but many rebelled and joined the French Resistance (Free French) led by the famous Charles de Gaulle. President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Winston Churchill (Prime Minister of the U.K.) saw that if the Allies liberated France, they could then eventually march to the capital of Germany and overthrow the Nazi Regime. They could win the war if D-Day worked.
